چکیده
Pattern completion in a neural network model of the thalamus and a biologically plausible model of synaptic plasticity are the key concepts used in this paper for analyzing some cognitive disorders that involve hallucinations of several kinds: visual hallucinations in the Charles Bonnet syndrome and psychedelic drugs consumption, somatic hallucination in phantom limbs, cognitive hallucinations in schizophrenia and even in multiple personality disorders. All these types of hallucinations are proposed to be the result of a pattern completion dynamics performed in thalamic deafferented areas. Effective treatments of some of these disorders involve peripheral stimulation jointly with a central inhibition so that the neural circuits generating the disorders are depressed according to the proposed model of synaptic plasticity. q 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. How to make large self-organizing maps for nonvectorial data
The self-organizing map (SOM) represents an open set of input samples by a topologically organized, finite set of models. In this paper, a new version of the SOM is used for the clustering, organization, and visualization of a large database of symbol sequences (viz. protein sequences). This method combines two principles: the batch computing version of the SOM, and computation of the generaliz...

This article gives an overview of the different functional brain imaging methods, the kinds of questions these methods try to address and some of the questions associated with functional neuroimaging data for which neural modeling must be employed to provide reasonable answers. q 2000 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
متن کاملBest approximation by Heaviside perceptron networks
In Lp-spaces with p an integer from [1, infinity) there exists a best approximation mapping to the set of functions computable by Heaviside perceptron networks with n hidden units; however for p an integer from (1, infinity) such best approximation is not unique and cannot be continuous.
متن کاملAssessing interactions among neuronal systems using functional neuroimaging
We show that new methods for measuring effective connectivity allow us to characterise the interactions between brain regions that underlie the complex interactions among different processing stages of functional architectures.
متن کاملThe maintenance of spatial accuracy by the perisaccadic remapping of visual receptive fields
Humans and monkeys can direct their eyes to the spatial location of briefly flashed targets even when a saccade intervenes between the stimulus flash and the saccade to acquire its location. It had been proposed that the oculomotor system performs this task by resorting to a supraretinal representation of space. In this paper we review neurophysiological and clinical data suggesting that the br...
